East Timor (Timor-Leste; Tetum: Timór Lorosa'e), officially the Democratic Republic of
Timor-Leste (Portuguese: República Democrática de
Timor-Leste, Tetum: Repúblika Demokrátika Timór-Leste), is a country in Southeast Asia. It comprises the eastern half of the island of
Timor, the nearby islands of Atauro and Jaco, and Oecusse, an exclave on the
northwestern side of the island surrounded by Indonesian West Timor. Australia is the country's southern neighbour, separated by
the Timor Sea. The country's size is about 15,007 km2
(5,794 sq mi). In 1999, following the United Nations-sponsored act of
self-determination, Indonesia relinquished control of the territory. East Timor
became the first new sovereign state of the
21st century on 20 May 2002 and joined the United Nations and the Community of
Portuguese Language Countries. In 2011, East Timor announced its intention to become the eleventh member of the Association of
Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Timor Leste is the only Asian
country to be located completely in the Southern Hemisphere.
Located in Southeast Asia, the island of Timor
is part of Maritime Southeast Asia,
and is the largest and easternmost of the Lesser Sunda Islands. To
the north of the island are the Ombai Strait, Wetar Strait, and the greater Banda Sea. The Timor Sea separates the island from Australia to the south, and the Indonesian Province of East Nusa Tenggara lies to
East Timor's west. Articles 5 and 71 of the 2002 constitution provide that
Oetcussi Ambeno be governed by a special administrative policy and economic
regime. Law 3/2014 of 18 June 2014 created the Special Administrative Region of
Oe-Cusse Ambeno (Região Administrativa Especial de Oecusse, RAEOA).
The first Portuguese colonial issues for
Portuguese Timor were overprinted on stamps of Macau in 1884. A definitive set
was issued in 1886. During the Indonesian
occupation of East Timor from 1975 to 1999, Indonesian stamps were
in use. Following the outcome of the East Timor
Special Autonomy Referendum, United Nations transitional administration was established in
1999 until East Timor's independence on 20 May 2002. During the transition
period, 2 stamps were issued in 2000, one for domestic mail and one for
international mail. The first stamps of independent East Timor were issued on
20 May 2002 and were produced by Australia Post.
Correios De Timor-Leste (CTL) is the
government agency which is responsible for providing postal services in East Timor. Correios De Timor-Leste became a member of the Universal Postal Union on
28 November 2003. The authority is also a member of International Association of Portuguese-Speaking Communications
(AICEP) from 2002.
These Airmail covers from East Timor sent by Carlos from USA during his visit in East Timor. Philatelists considers East Timor as one among the rarest country to get stamps and covers. Many famous cover collectors received letters from East Timor after one year of posting. Now their postal system is improved, reaching covers quick and perfect. They have very limited issues of stamps.
